Bosch is one of my favorite shows. Both the books and the show are police procedurals that capture the intricacies and politics of real-world police work by following detective Harry Bosch, a tough military vet who is a stickler for the rules, especially his own. He’s the type of hero everyone loves – the one who does the right thing even if it’s wrong, with a past full of missteps that follow him like a shadow.
The Amazon Series does a wonderful job of capturing the world of the Hollywood Homicide Division as well as Bosch’s complex professional and personal worlds. Over the course of its five seasons, you see characters grow and evolve, both as a police officer and in their private lives.
Titus Welliver captures the essence and contradictions of Bosch perfectly. He’s one of those actors with the charismatic draw that forces you to watch his every move.
Out of all the seasons, the latest one, season 5, is the least powerful, but still entertaining. The previous four seasons had taken Harry down some dark places and major issues in his life had come to some sort of resolution, so season 5 feels more like the kickoff of the next multi-season arc than a A-Z satisfactory experience.
It does have it’s season-specific storyline that is completed, however, it is the open loops left unfinished that make me anxious for season six and beyond.
If you like a solid, and sometimes powerful, police drama, Bosch is for you. Start at season one and enjoy the ride.
